Lummis Blasts Democratic Majority for Failure to Propose a Budget Resolution

Press Release

Date: June 22, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), a member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after House Democratic leaders announced their intention to forgo crafting a budget blueprint in 2010:

"In 2006, Representative Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said enacting a budget was the most basic responsibility of governing. Four years later, House Majority Leader Hoyer's budget is nowhere to be found.

"The failure to even attempt to craft a budget resolution in a time when our national debt has surpassed $13 trillion is an act of irresponsibility and a lack of leadership within the Democratic Majority. This dangerous precedent is an insult and flies in the face of Americans' repeated calls for fiscal responsibility.

"Washington's tax, borrow and spend agenda is a ticking time bomb. Tough decisions about our country's fiscal path need to be made before it's too late. Families and businesses have cut their budgets and tightened their belts in order to make things work. It's time Washington follows their good example. This is not the time to run away from the challenges facing our economy."

Background:

Not since the enactment of the 1974 Budget Act has the House failed to craft a budget resolution.

Lummis has joined Republicans on the House Budget Committee in identifying $1.3 trillion in realistic savings over the next ten years. The plan includes legislation written by Lummis, H.R. 5348, the Federal Workforce Reduction Act. The bill aims to gradually reduce the size of the civilian federal workforce, and would save at least $35 billion over ten years.
