Earth to Boehner: There's Nothing "Natural" About the Gulf Oil Spill

In the wake of House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Joe Barton's apology to BP, Republican leaders John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Mike Pence called the massive Gulf oil spill a "natural disaster." Congressman Joe Courtney issued the following statement reminding Republicans that the ongoing massive environmental catastrophe is anything but natural.

"In their rush to distance themselves from Congressman Barton's self-inflicted PR nightmare, Republican leaders once again revealed themselves as reflexively subservient to Big Oil," Courtney said. "Despite what Representatives Boehner, Cantor and Pence say, there is nothing "natural' about a man-made catastrophe 5,000 feet beneath the ocean surface.

"60,000 barrels of oil are spewing into the Gulf every single day, not because of nature, but because of an oil rig explosion for which BP is solely responsible. Even when they are scrambling to disavow the highest-ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee's outrageous apology to BP, GOP leaders Boehner, Cantor and Pence still cannot bring themselves to criticize BP's actions. The only thing "natural' about this disaster is the knee-jerk Republican defense of Big Oil."
