Remarks at Press Conference Celebrating 100+ Cosponsors for House Comprehensive Immigration Bill (CIR ASAP)

Statement

What does it say about our nation, when millions of families across our country live in fear of our own immigration policies? A set of laws that are so broken that the President's own aunt might be deported from our country; laws that are so broken that in families in my district in Colorado, kids come home from school not knowing whether their mother or father will be in detention or will be deported from the country.

This is an immigration system that is contrary to our American values, and one that people of all ideological stripes should take pride in trying to fix. It's high time to replace our broken immigration system with one that works.

What are the obstacles standing in the way? How can anybody look the American people in the face and say "let's keep it the way it is, it's working great"?

I find that across the ideological spectrum, from the left or the right, nobody is happy with how our immigration system works. And it is a federal responsibility, a congressional responsibility, to fix that broken immigration system. And that's why I join 100 of my colleagues as a proud sponsor of the comprehensive immigration reform bill in the House and I call on the rest of my colleagues to move quickly with the urgency of the legislative calendar here in these chambers and the moral urgency for millions of families across our country to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
