Moran Statement on Nation's High Unemployment Rate

Statement

Date: June 4, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerry Moran issued the following statement today after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the nation's unemployment rate fell a fraction of a percent from 9.9 percent to 9.7 percent in May.

"While the Department of Labor says the unemployment rate improved slightly in May, over 95 percent of the new jobs created are temporary jobs for Census employees, which will end in the next few weeks. Over 15 million Americans remain unemployed, and the only long-term strategy to get our economy back on track is to move away from the effort to grow the size of government through reckless spending and focus on policies that encourage growth in the private sector," said Moran.

"In May, thousands of Kansas students graduated from college and many are now looking for their first full-time job. These students joined millions of Americans in looking for work as our nation's unemployment rate dropped just .2 percent last month. It is no wonder businesses are slow to hire new workers when the message coming from Washington is more taxes, more regulation and more control over businesses. Congressional leaders and the Obama Administration have created an environment of uncertainty that is increasing the cost of doing business in America," said Moran.

"It is clear this approach has not worked. History shows that sustainable economic growth starts with the private sector, so it is now more important than ever for Congress to implement pro-growth policies, cut government spending, and reduce our massive national debt. Our generation has a responsibility to the next generation of Americans to make tough choices, and the time is now."
