Congresswoman Laura Richardson Announces More Than $59 Million in Title I Allocations for Compton and Long Beach School Districts

Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced that Long Beach Unified School District and Compton Unified School District, will be allocated a combined total of $59,073,369 in Title I, Part A funding under the 2010 U.S. Department of Education Appropriations Act. Title I, Part A grants provide financial assistance to school districts for services that improve the teaching and learning of children at risk of not meeting challenging academic standards, especially those children who reside in areas with high concentrations of low-income families.

"These grants are necessary for our elementary and secondary schools to continue to help children succeed, especially at this time when both of these school districts are in danger of having to lay off teachers because their budgets cannot afford to keep them employed," Congresswoman Richardson said. "This funding, in particular, will make sure the schools still have the resources to help our most vulnerable students reach their full potential and have rewarding careers and lives."

Compton Unified School District will receive $17,141,916 for the 2010-11 fiscal year, and Long Beach Unified School District will be allocated $41,391,453 for the same period. Elementary and secondary schools in both Carson and the Watts and Willowbrook neighborhoods are under the guidance of the Los Angeles Unified School District and will also benefit from Title I allocations. The Los Angeles Unified School District will receive grants totaling $407,376,777 for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

"The education of our children must serve as the foundation of the rebuilding of our economy and we must be dedicated to making sure they have the essential tools they need to succeed," Congresswoman Richardson added. "Providing this funding is not optional, but mandatory to secure their present and offer them a promising future."
