Statement of Governor Warner on the Senate of Virginia's Passage of the Primary Seatbelt Enforcement Bill

RICHMOND — Governor Mark R. Warner today issued the following statement on the 24-16 vote on final passage in the Senate of Virginia of SB 1325, allowing law enforcement officers to enforce Virginia's existing seatbelt law.

"Wearing a safety belt in the front seat of a vehicle has long been the law of the land in Virginia. Today, I commend Senator Mims for his leadership on this issue and the Senate for its vote to allow our law enforcement officers to enforce this law effectively. It will save lives, prevent injuries, and lower health costs for us all. It is a long overdue reform. It is my hope that members of the House of Delegates will support our law enforcement officers in their efforts to save lives."
