GANGEL: These two congresswomen, one a Republican, one a Democrat, say they are both in Congress today thanks to Ferraro.

Representative MELISSA HART (Republican, Pennsylvania): You know, she really did help-it didn't matter what party-to break the barrier and actually have people come to look at the woman as 'Oh, she's, you know, not just the woman, she's the candidate.'

Representative TAMMY BALDWIN (Democrat, Wisconsin): It was probably the most significant, symbolic political impact that I can remember in my life, the feeling I can do anything.
