Van Hollen Applauds Committee Passage of the DISCLOSE Act

Statement

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the Committee on House Administration's markup of the DISCLOSE Act:

"I want to applaud the Committee on House Administration's work to complete its markup of the bipartisan DISCLOSE Act today. As many Members of the Committee echoed today, we must act swiftly to address the Supreme Court's radical ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission -- the decision allows corporations to spend unlimited funds and gives them undue influence in our electoral system.

"The DISCLOSE Act will promote transparency and disclosure, and ensure those powerful special interests spending millions of dollars are not able to hide behind third party groups, sham organizations, and dummy corporations. Chairman Brady's leadership has been central to this effort, and today's markup is an important step forward in the process of passing this legislation. Moving forward I urge my colleagues to put politics aside and support this legislation, which will provide voters with more information so they can make informed decisions. Failure to act is not an option for the American people."
