Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement in response to the House Republicans' political antics yesterday that blocked a bipartisan bill, the COMPETES Act, that would create jobs and keep our economy moving in the right direction:
"Yesterday, Republicans chose once again to obstruct progress by blocking reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act, a popular bill supported by businesses, universities, and leading scientists that would invest in American innovation and create good, sustainable jobs in the United States. It is shameful that they have abandoned their own position from 2007, when many of these same programs passed the House overwhelmingly with a bipartisan vote of 367-57.
"Republicans in the House have made a cynical choice to engage in political stunts rather than taking meaningful action to give American businesses and entrepreneurs a competitive edge in the global economy."
