Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on President Obama's announcement that he will nominate Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the United States Supreme Court:

"I applaud the President's nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to serve on the United States Supreme Court. She is highly regarded as one of our country's leading legal minds. As the first woman to serve as the Dean at Harvard Law School and the first woman to serve as Solicitor General, she has been a leader throughout her career.

"Solicitor General Kagan has earned praise across the political spectrum for her deep commitment to justice and fairness. She is indisputably qualified and if confirmed, she will make an exceptional Justice."
