Congresswoman Richardson Praises President Obama's Choice Of Elena Kagan To Replace Retiring Supreme Court Justice Stevens

Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson hails President Obama's decision to nominate U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court. If approved by the Senate, Kagan will replace retiring Associate Justice John Paul Stevens.
"As he did last year when he nominated Justice Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama has once again thoroughly approached this important duty and chosen an exceptional nominee," Congresswoman Richardson said. "A quick glimpse at her resume shows that Solicitor General Kagan meets all the qualifications to succeed the legendary Justice Stevens. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Kagan had the opportunity two clerk for two of the most respected legal minds of the second half of the 20th Century, Abner Mikva, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. She has served in private practice, as assistant White House Counsel, as professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School and Harvard Law School and as the first female dean of Harvard Law School before being appointed Solicitor General in 2009.

"The granddaughter of Russian-Jewish immigrants, Elena Kagan is the embodiment of the American Dream and a perfect example of how through hard work and strong ethics you can reach your goals and make the world a better place all at the same time," Congresswoman Richardson added. "Her understanding and respect of the law is well known and there are few, if any, better choices to fill this opening on the Supreme Court. I urge the Senate to act in a timely manner in holding its hearings on this nomination and look forward to Ms. Kagan taking her seat on the Court."
