Hoeven Names McEvers to East Central Judicial District

Gov. John Hoeven today named state Labor Commissioner Lisa K. Fair McEvers of Bismarck to the East Central Judicial District Court, chambered in Fargo. McEvers will replace presiding Judge Georgia Dawson, who is retiring effective September 1. The East Central Judicial District includes the counties of Cass, Steele and Traill.

"Lisa will do an outstanding job for the citizens of the East Central Judicial District, and will serve with professionalism and distinction," Hoeven said. "Her broad legal experience as a private attorney, prosecutor and commissioner for the Department of Labor will give her the skills and knowledge necessary to serve the district well."

In 2005, Hoeven named McEvers commissioner of the North Dakota Department of Labor, where she oversees the enforcement of the state's wage and hour laws and discrimination laws pertaining to employment, housing, public service, public accommodation and credit transactions. Prior to that appointment, McEvers served as an Assistant State's Attorney for Cass County and worked in private practice.

A native of Minto, McEvers attended the University of North Dakota School of Law and graduated with honors, receiving a Juris Doctor in 1997. Following law school, she served as a law clerk to the Hon. William A. Neumann of the North Dakota Supreme Court. McEvers also earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of North Dakota in 1993, majoring in information management.

Prior to attending law school, McEvers worked for the Northeast Judicial District in court administration for seven years. She has served on the Judicial Education Committee and the Judiciary Standards Committee of the North Dakota Supreme Court, as well as the State Bar Association's Commission for Continuing Education and the Rough Rider Industries Prison Advisory Board.

Dawson was first elected East Central District judge in 1994, and was re-elected in 1996, 2002 and 2008.

"Judge Dawson has a distinguished record of service with the East Central Judicial District and the state of North Dakota, and has been a steadfast steward of the law," Hoeven said. "We thank Judge Dawson for her many years of dedicated service to the court and the legal profession, and for the important work she has done on behalf of our citizens."
