Merkley Statement on the Nomination of Solicitor General Kagan to the Supreme Court

Statement

Date: May 10, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Judicial Branch

President Barack Obama today announced that U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan will be his nominee to the Supreme Court. Oregon's Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement on the nomination:

"Solicitor General Kagan has had a unique and diverse legal career and is widely recognized for her ability to build consensus between colleagues with opposing opinions. I believe the Supreme Court needs justices who can bring that sort of perspective and track record and that there is value in returning to a tradition of having justices with more varied life experiences on the Court. I look forward to meeting Solicitor General Kagan and learning more about her views and background as the confirmation process moves forward."
