Moran Statement On Nation's Increased Unemployment Rate

Statement

Date: May 7, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerry Moran (R-KS) issued the following statement today after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the nation's unemployment rate rose to 9.9 percent in April.

"With our nation's unemployment rate back near 10 percent, it is clear our economy is far from recovered and millions of Americans are still looking for work. Temporary jobs with the Census accounted for nearly a quarter of the net jobs created last month and are good news for workers in the short-term, but they need long-term job security," said Moran. "The simple reality is that businesses are reluctant to hire new workers because of the increased cost and uncertainty of doing business. Employers will soon be faced with a series of tax hikes, including penalties and burdensome regulations from the new health care law. The Administration has created an environment of uncertainty in our economy with massive spending increases and are advocating for a destructive Value Added Tax to pay for these government programs.

Moving forward, the only way to get our economy back on track and help more Kansans find work is to implement pro-growth policies, cut government spending and reduce our massive national debt. Congress needs to take a lesson from commonsense Kansans and starting living within its means."
