Moran's Statement On Need To Cut The National Debt

Statement

Date: April 27, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerry Moran made the following statement today as the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform meets for the first time. The 18-member panel, which was created in February, has been tasked with making recommendations on how to reduce the nation's debt. The national debt is more than $12 trillion and continues to grow.

"The massive national debt is a problem that threatens our country and the welfare of future generations," Moran said. "I am glad we are finally focusing the national conversation on this problem.

"The debt commission should focus its work on the need to fundamentally reduce government spending. We do not have a revenue problem in America; we have a spending problem. More taxes, like the proposed value-added tax, are not the answer. Attempts to raise taxes will only hurt economic recovery and take away more American freedoms. It is time for Washington to realize that spending must be cut to get our country back on sound financial footing. We owe it to our kids and our grandkids."
