Congressman Jerry Moran issued the following statement today as millions of Americans send their tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service.
"Today is a day that is often dreaded by Americans each year. For a majority of American taxpayers, it is painfully clear that our nation's tax system is deeply flawed and needs significant reform," said Moran. "Americans work for three months of the year just to earn enough money to pay their federal, state and local taxes. It is unacceptable and unfair to ask struggling Kansas families to forfeit at least a quarter of their annual wages to prop up an ever-growing bureaucracy."
"Instead of bringing relief to Kansas taxpayers, a senior White House adviser recently proposed a series of new taxes. This European-style value-added tax would be levied at every stage of production, increase the cost of goods and be paid by individuals at all income levels. As a member of the Anti-VAT Caucus, I recognize the danger of imposing this new tax upon the American economy, and I have joined more than a dozen of my colleagues in calling on President Obama to reject any additional tax hikes."
"Rather than adding new taxes, Congress should be focused on reforming the current tax structure. I have called upon the newly installed Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Sander Levin, to schedule hearings on simplifying the tax code. The Fair Tax is one idea I have asked the Committee to consider. It would be a good place to start the conversation on tax reform."
"In Kansas and across the country today, taxpayers are gathering in rallies to make their voices heard. Members of Congress have an obligation to listen to their concerns. The American people need relief and Congress should respond. Jobs today and the health of the U.S. economy tomorrow demand our action," said Moran.
Ken Hoagland, Chairman of the FairTax National Victory Campaign, commented on Congressman Moran's efforts to simplify the tax code: "Representative Moran has shown his strong character and leadership again in taking a stand for FairTax legislation desperately needed by the nation. This legislation has growing citizen support to correct the corruption and dysfunction of the income tax system and has 66 co-sponsors in the House and Senate. We will not give up until the FairTax bill is heard in committee and enacted on the floor of the House of Representatives and we are grateful to have such a strong friend in Rep. Jerry Moran."
