Statement By Alexi Giannoulias In Light of Rapid Momentum Toward Meaningful Wall Street Reform

Statement

Date: April 22, 2010

"It is increasingly clear that the U.S. Senate is poised to pass comprehensive Wall Street reform with bipartisan support. I will strongly support legislation that will protect consumers against abuses in mortgages and other loans, establish a council of regulators to watch for risks to the financial system, bring derivatives onto an open market, and prevent another taxpayer-funded bailout of Wall Street firms. The current bills from the Banking and Agriculture committees achieve all of these goals.

"I call on Congressman Kirk to explain his bizarre opposition to these bipartisan Wall Street reform bills. Does he have a problem with a new consumer protection agency? Does he believe that derivatives should continue to be traded in the dark with no accountability? The only reasonable explanation for Mark Kirk's obstruction is that he is doing the bidding of his Wall Street contributors instead of protecting the people of Illinois from their abuses."
