Van Hollen Applauds Hhs Announcement That Several Health Insurers Will Voluntarily Implement Young Adult Provision Early

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services will work with health insurers to voluntarily provide coverage for graduating college seniors and young adults under the age of 26 in advance of the law's start date:

"I want to applaud Secretary Sebelius and several health insurers on their work to voluntarily provide coverage for graduating college seniors and young adults under the age of 26 in advance of the provision's September start date, and I encourage other insurers to do the same. As we work to implement this historic reform legislation, cooperation from the health insurance industry will be critical for a smooth transition.

"This was a key bipartisan provision that Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D-PA) and I advocated for as part of the health insurance reform legislation signed by President Obama. This important reform will benefit millions of young people who have traditionally either been unable to afford coverage or have not had access to it. The sooner it is implemented, the sooner young adults and their families will see relief during what can be a difficult time of transition."
