Statement
As millions of Americans file their income taxes today, they are reminded of a national tax structure that is unfair and discourages hard work. Sadly, at a time when 15 million Americans remain unemployed and many more are struggling to make ends meet, the Obama-Pelosi-Reid policies increase taxes and add to our deficit.
Federal, state, and local taxes claim almost 27 percent of the average American's income. That means most Americans have probably worked the first three months of this year just to pay their taxes. That burden will only increase under the current leadership.
President Obama and the Majority party are spending the federal government into a record deficit of $1.5 trillion dollars this year alone. Unfortunately, the burden to pay for it will fall squarely on the shoulders of American families, small businesses, and family farms for years to come.
The income taxes that Americans are paying today are only part of the rising cost of government. Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid are pushing an agenda through Congress that is crippling state and local governments. From New York to California, states are facing record deficits and looking to increase taxes on everything from fast food to property.
Then, there is the health care bill. Just this week, the Joint Committee on Taxation reported the health care bill that was rammed through Congress last month would violate the President's pledge by raising billions of dollars taxes on those earning less than $200,000 a year.
That is only the start. Employer mandates penalize business owners. Medical device taxes will hurt both the companies that make them and people who need them. The new health care law will even take away the tax-free benefit for buying basic medicine cabinet products through a Health Savings Account.
For a vast majority of Americans, the cost of the health care bill is especially painful. The new law means their tax dollars will now be used to fund abortion services. Most Americans strongly oppose this use of their hard-earned money, but this did not stop Majority leaders from ending more than 30 years of bipartisan agreement that barred the use of federal dollars for the destruction of unborn lives.
We must put an end to the national energy tax and repeal the government-run health care that included more than $1.2 trillion in new spending over the next ten years and increased taxes by $570 billion.
The solution is not taking more money from the American people. The answer is fiscal discipline in Washington, DC, and tax relief for working Americans.
Arkansans know that we can't borrow, spend and tax our way back to prosperity. It is time for Congress to put the American people first and take steps that make tax day less painful.

thumbnailCongressman Boozman attended celebration ceremonies thanking representatives of Mistubishi Power Systems Americas, Inc. for selecting Fort Smith as the home of a new wind-turbine manufacturing plant. Mitsubishi Power plans to invest $100 million in the community, which could create as many as 400 jobs. In addition, the company plans to have the plant built by early 2011 which will result in the employment of hundreds of construction workers.
