Today, U.S. House Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), member of Senior leadership and the Energy and Commerce Committee, was appointed by Speaker Pelosi as one of the three Democratic House members of the President's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. Also named was Xavier Bacerra, Vice Chair, Democratic Caucus and John Spratt, Chairman of the House Budget Committee.
Representative Schakowsky stated, "I am honored to be chosen to serve on President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. The Commission is an important forum to discuss critical budget issues in a broad context, looking at spending priorities and revenue needs as well as effective ways to reduce the deficit. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, co-chair of the Seniors Task Force and former executive director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens, I am particularly eager to find solutions that reduce the deficit without undermining the essential protections provided by Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
