Smith Urges House To Reject "Slaughter Solution"

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today urged his colleagues to support a resolution requiring an up-or-down vote on Senate-passed health care legislation.

If adopted, the resolution would have prohibited the House from implementing the "Slaughter Solution," a controversial legislative maneuver in which the Senate version of the health care bill would be "deemed as passed" by the House of Representatives without an actual up-or-down vote.

"Nebraskans cannot trust the policy if there is no confidence in the procedure. Despite statements by President Obama and the Democrat leadership promising an open and fair process, we are instead getting legislative gimmicks and parliamentary maneuvers designed to avoid an up-or-down vote on a bill which impacts every one of us," Smith said.
