U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions today condemned House Democrats' "Slaughter Solution" to bypass a direct vote in the House of Representatives to send the wildly unpopular Senate government-run healthcare bill to President Obama to become law.
Named after Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY), the Slaughter Solution would create a legislative trick to approve or "deem" the Senate healthcare bill through the House of Representatives without an actual vote on the bill. In a ruse to quell widespread disgust with Democrat backroom deals, the Slaughter Solution implements a bait-and-switch tactic that hides the kickback-laden Senate healthcare bill inside a so-called "corrections" bill that faces a doubtful future in the Senate while the original Senate healthcare bill goes straight to President Obama.
"The Slaughter Solution is a disgrace to the House of Representatives and tramples on democracy by attempting to silence the voice of the American people," stated Sessions. "At town hall meetings, through letters and calls, and in recent elections, the American people have loudly stated that they do not want a government-takeover of their healthcare. Unfortunately, Democrats in Congress care more about their radical liberal agenda than the voice of the American people, and they will stop at nothing to force this government-run healthcare scheme down the throats of the American people."
Sessions, a member of the House Rules Committee, has also joined his Committee colleagues and Congressman Charlie Dent (R-GA) in renewing calls for cameras in the powerful but secretive Rules Committee. The only non-confidential House committee without installed cameras, the Rules Committee will determine the final contents of the Slaughter Solution healthcare scheme. Sessions is a co-sponsor of Congressman Dent's resolution requiring cameras in the Rules Committee -- a sunlight transparency measure that Speaker Pelosi has flatly refused to consider in the House.
"With backroom deals for state payouts like the Cornhusker Kickback for Nebraska, the Louisiana Purchase, and Gator-Aid for Florida, Americans' freedom in healthcare is being bought and sold in Congress," Sessions said. "It's past time to shine the light in the Rules Committee and show the American people what the Majority plans to do to their healthcare."
"Democrats in Congress can run, but they cannot hide," Sessions continued. "They cannot fool the American people by trying to hide their vote on a government takeover of healthcare for political cover. I will continue fighting for transparency in the legislative process, and I will stand with the American people in holding the Majority accountable for their actions. The American people deserve far better than the reckless political agenda of Democrats in Congress."
