Democrats Reject Up-Or-Down Vote On Health Care

Statement

Representative John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement today after the House of Representatives rejected a measure which would have prevented the Leadership from ramming the Senate health care bill through the House without a vote. House Resolution 1188, which was introduced by Republican Representative Parker Griffith, M.D., would have prevented the Democrats from bringing a rule or order to the floor that allows for a vote on the reconciliation package (full of changes to the Senate bill) unless it also allows for an up-or-down vote on the Senate bill. This vote would have prevented the Democrats from using the "Slaughter Solution" and merely deeming the Senate bill as passed.

"Congress today took one step closer to not only passing legislation without reading it, but also passing legislation without voting on it. By "deeming' the Senate health care bill passed by the House, Democrats hope to absolve their members of any responsibility for voting for a bill chocked full of taxes, higher premiums, back room deals and tax payer funded abortions. I have bad news for the Majority -- the American People see through this shell game. No matter how many ways the Majority tries to disguise this vote, the American people know a vote for the rule is nothing more than a vote for a government takeover of health care which they have overwhelmingly rejected 2 to 1."
