Boozman Statement On GOP Earmark Moratorium

Statement

Date: March 11, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) issued the following statement after the House Republican conference unanimously voted to abstain from the use of earmarks:

"The proposed federal budget for 2011 is 3.8 trillion dollars with 1.6 trillion dollars of that being deficit spending. The deficit for one year will be over ten percent of the current total national debt. The American people see this out of control spending and they are demanding that the government stop spending money that it does not have.

Earmarks are a major part of our continually increasing debt. While not all earmarks are illegitimate, the system is definitely broken and needs to be reformed. Until real earmark reform can be passed, the House Republicans have chosen to abstain from all earmark requests. We must start bringing this out of control debt down."
