Sen. Cornyn Statement on Tax Extenders Act of 2009

Statement

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Finance Committee and Republican Leadership, today made the following statement after today's vote on H.R. 4213, the Tax Extenders Act of 2009:

"My Democratic colleagues still don't get it. Americans are fed up with Washington's refusal to stop deficit spending. They are fed up with hypocritical representatives that cynically pass legislation, like pay-as-you-go rules, knowing full well that they will ignore them anytime they want to borrow and spend more money.

"I fully support passing all-important tax extenders, namely the sales tax deduction that is included in the bill, as long as it is paid for. This bill adds almost $100 billion to the debt.

If Congress is really interested in fiscal discipline, it should look for savings in the federal budget and make the necessary difficult choices. Otherwise, this vicious cycle will never end and Congress will continue to borrow billions and billions on the backs of working families and small businesses."

Background

Sen. Cornyn twice voted for fully paid-for versions of this legislation that would have extended tax relief for all without adding to the deficit. Both versions were rejected by the Senate.
