White House Reiterates Strong Support for Alex Giannoulias' Candidacy Today

During the White House briefing today, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs reiterated the White House's support for Alexi Giannoulias' Senate campaign. Giannoulias is visiting the White House for the annual Greek Independence Day event and is also meeting with David Axelrod to discuss the race and how Giannoulias will win in November.

When asked a question on the Illinois race for the U.S. Senate by Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Major Garrett, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs gave the following response:
"Alexi Giannoulias is the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate, and has the support and the backing of the White House."

The most recent public, independent polling conducted by Research 2000 in late February shows Alexi Giannoulias leading Congressman Mark Kirk by 7 points. In addition, polling has consistently shown President Barack Obama's approval ratings in Illinois at over 64 percent.

"My meetings today at the White House have been very productive, and the support of the President is a great asset in a state where 64 percent of voters approve of the job he is doing. While my opponent opposes the White House agenda every chance he gets, I want to help the president change the broken system here in Washington."
