Fleming Responds To Details Of President Obama's Health Care Plan

Representative John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after President Barack Obama's speech today on health care reform:

"I cannot support a bill that raises taxes, raises premiums, cuts Medicare, and lays an enormous unfunded Medicaid expansion on my state just because it might include a few token Republican ideas. I will continue to stand with my constituents, who overwhelmingly want us to stop fiddling with this awful government takeover of health care and start over, focusing on reforms that will control health care costs one step at a time. A small gesture of bipartisanship will not lure me into voting for a bill that will give the government even more power over the sacred doctor/patient relationship.

"In his statement today, the President showed an alarming lack of basic economic knowledge and clearly doesn't understand what his proposal would do to small businesses in America. He also said not long ago that "If we want to transform the country, that requires a sizeable majority.' Today, he is throwing aside that promise and moving forward with heavy-handed tactics that the American people will not and should not tolerate.

"Just moments ago, the President urged members of Congress who believe that less regulation is the way to improve health care and bring down costs to vote against this bill. For this exact reason, among others, I plan to vote against this irresponsible legislation."

John Fleming is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana. He is a member of the House Armed Services and Natural Resources Committees.
