Murphy Statement On Health Insurance Rate Increases In Connecticut

Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement on recent reports that health insurance rates in Connecticut will rise by 20% for policy holders in the individual health insurance market.

"Enough is enough. The fact that people in Connecticut buying their own health insurance are going to have to bear the burden of a 20% rate hike in a recession screams for the need for national health care reform. And that reform has to drive down health care costs for everyone and ask those making the biggest bucks off of the system to take a little less.

"The most outrageous aspect of this situation is that it could have been worse. If Connecticut's largest health insurer had had its way, Connecticut customers would have been asked to shoulder a 32% increase. In Connecticut, we have a system set up to review and rule on situations like this one, and this case illustrates exactly why we need a nationwide review system, like President Obama proposed yesterday. This problem is clearly not going to fix itself, so that's why I've been fighting for reforms that put a cap on how much a health insurer can raise rates on a customer. We can't back down from this fight."
