As the sole member of the Connecticut Congressional Delegation to vote against the Wall Street Bailout, Representative Joe Courtney released the following statement today, responding to reports that Wall Street bonuses surged 17 percent to total more than $20 billion in 2009.
"Once again, and without much surprise, Wall Street has once again eschewed the generosity of the American taxpayers by paying out huge bonuses even as our nation continues to recover from the collapse caused by their risky behavior."
"The American people saved Wall Street, and I had hoped that we would have seen some humility in return -- not this kind of continued arrogance."
One of the reasons Congressman Courtney voted against the Wall Street Bailout three times -- twice under President Bush and once under President Obama -- was because of the lack of accountability over the banks' use of the funds.
