New Poll Shows Giannoulias Leading; Democrats in Strong Position

Despite a negative atmosphere for Congressional Democrats nationally and a hard-fought Democratic primary in Illinois, a new poll released today by the Alexi for Illinois campaign shows U.S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias with a 49 to 45 percent lead over Republican incumbent Congressman Mark Kirk. This latest poll shows that the United States Senate race in Illinois is not only winnable for the Democrat but problematic for an incumbent Republican Congressman with a record of supporting the failed economic policies of the past and has said unemployment is not a big issue.

"Illinois families want a fighter who will fix the mess in Washington and bring new, good jobs to Illinois," said Giannoulias. "Washington insider Mark Kirk has said he doesn't think 'unemployment is a big issue,' proving that being in Washington for 10 years has led him to be out of touch with everyday families. It is clear that Congressman Mark Kirk will only take us back to the failed Bush economic policies of the past, while I have an economic plan that will help turn this economy around, assist small businesses and working families, and move our country forward."

"Despite a deteriorating national climate for Democrats, Alexi Giannoulias is in a strong position to beat Washington insider Mark Kirk in November," said Michael Bocian, the Alexi for Illinois campaign pollster.

The general election findings are based on a sample of 600 likely general election voters conducted February 9-14, 2010 conducted for the Giannoulias campaign. A sample of this size is subject to a margin of error of +/- 4.0 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
