Heinrich Says Don't Privatize Social Security Or Dismantle Medicare

Today, U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) responded strongly in defense of Social Security and Medicare. In a series of interviews and opinion pieces over the last few days, House Republicans dusted off their plans to privatize Social Security and dismantle Medicare by turning it into a voucher program. These are old ideas that have been rejected by the American people.

"Republican tactics to frighten and alarm Americans are out of hand. Six months ago, Republicans whipped up a town-hall frenzy over protecting Medicare, and now they propose to do away with it entirely? Such a hasty and undemocratic procedure would be unprecedented.

"Millions of seniors and people with disabilities depend on Social Security and Medicare benefits. Wounded soldiers and their spouses and children receive Social Security benefits, as well as the families of soldiers who have died for their country. These are the very programs that have kept our nation healthy and our communities solvent in these dire financial times."
