Ellison in Solidarity With Iranian People

Statement

Congressman Keith Ellison (D-5th District) released the following statement in solidarity with people in Iran and around the world who are protesting repressive conditions in Iran:

"As Iran marks the 31st Anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, millions of Iranians both inside and outside the country will gather to demand their civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights in the face of harsh Iranian government crackdowns.

Iran's human rights record is appalling and shows no sign of improving. Since the disputed elections in June 2009, over 40 people have died in demonstrations and more than 100 people are believed to have been sentenced to prison terms or flogging after unfair trials. It is estimated that over 3,000 Iranians remain imprisoned due to the crackdown and in January 2010, two political prisoners were executed while 9 more received the death sentence. Iran has 65 journalists and bloggers currently in prison--more than any other country in the world. Women who seek equal rights are accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.

This crackdown in Iran is not only in violation of Iran's international obligations but also a violation of Iran's own Constitution. The United States should demonstrate strong support for the universal human rights to which all Iranians are entitled by working with the international community to continue to press for accountability for Iran's human rights abuses.

We are witnessing a brave struggle by the Iranian people to demand their basic rights. I stand in solidarity with the people of Iran who are demanding their right to freedom of expression, assembly, and conscience."
