Lummis Vows To Support Presidential Veto Of Big Spending Bills

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., is urging President Barack Obama to use his veto power on any legislation that would violate his commitment to freezing the overall level of non-defense discretionary spending for the next three years.

Lummis spearheaded a letter, signed by 11 eleven members of the House of Representatives, to show their commitment to vote to uphold a veto of any spending legislation increasing non-defense spending over last year's levels.

"The President's proposal to freeze overall spending levels solidifies the bipartisan consensus that our nation cannot sustain this dangerous fiscal path," the letter stated. "Because the future we leave our children and grandchildren depends on how strongly we commit to fiscal responsibility today, we urge him to use his veto pen to enforce this commitment.

"While American families have been forced to freeze or cut the family budget because of the recession, the federal government has done little to curb its appetite for spending. In 2009, President Obama signed into law a debt-financed $1.1 trillion stimulus bill, two omnibus spending bills totaling more than $855 billion, and a 12 percent increase in regular non-defense spending. With each citizen now owing nearly $40,000 of our over $12 trillion in national debt and facing a tripling of that burden, the American people have had enough.

"The President is taking a token but nevertheless promising first step in reassuring the American public that its government is serious about getting our fiscal house in order. We look forward to working with him to secure the hope of opportunity and prosperity for today's generation and those to come."
