Sen. Cornyn Statement On The Conrad-Gregg Commission

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, today issued the following statement after the Senate voted down the Conrad Amendment to H.J. Resolution 45, a proposal that would have created a bipartisan commission to propose long range steps to relieve the mounting debt facing the nation:

"This Senate must reduce the debt and stop wasteful, unprecedented deficit spending. Instead, the majority has passed a trillion-dollar stimulus bill, approved appropriations bills that included double-digit increases over the previous year, and cut backroom deals to force through a $2.5 trillion government takeover of our health care system," Sen. Cornyn said.

"The Conrad-Gregg Commission would have forced Congress to debate how to bring fiscal discipline to the federal government and helped put a stop to wasteful spending," he added.
