Heinrich Applauds Senate For Passing PAY-AS-YOU-GO Legislation

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich made the following statement today after the Senate passed pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) legislation by a party-line vote of 60 to 40. Rep. Heinrich is an original cosponsor of H.R. 2920, the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2009, which is the version of the PAYGO legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"I've been fighting to reduce our national deficit and tighten the purse strings here in Washington. PAYGO is a common sense approach to responsible budgeting and I applaud the Senate for taking action on this legislation. This long overdue measure will impose meaningful financial discipline to government spending."

The House has twice passed its version of PAYGO legislation. The slight differences between the House and Senate version of the legislation will need to be worked out before the bill can go to President Obama for his signature. Last night, in his State of the Union address, the President called upon the Senate to pass PAYGO legislation.
