Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement after President Obama submitted to Congress his $3.8 trillion budget proposal for fiscal year 2011.
"I am committed to balancing our budget and paying down our debt. I will not support irresponsible spending proposals which demand higher taxes and pay no attention to our financial priorities or realities.
"I appreciate President Obama's recent statements regarding fiscal responsibility. However, rhetoric must be backed up with action. The President's budget more than doubles our national debt, drives spending to a record $3.8 trillion, pushes the deficit to an unheard of $1.6 trillion, and raises taxes by more than $2 trillion over the next ten years. We need to take a hard look at some of the new entitlement spending included in this budget.
"Fiscal responsibility isn't a Republican or a Democrat issue. It is our promise to all Americans not to waste taxpayer dollars and instead hold the line on spending. During these touch economic times, so many people have had to tighten their budgets and make tough spending decisions. Congress should be no different," Smith said.
