Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on President Obama's State of the Union Address:
"President Obama laid out a clear plan to continue creating jobs for Americans, strengthen small businesses, and ensure our economy works for everyone. As he said tonight, our economy is in better shape than it was this time last year, but there is more we must do to create long-term economic growth and broadly shared prosperity. We must also work to bring down our nation's deficit and leave our children with greater fiscal security.
"We can no longer allow corporate special interests to determine what is best for American families -- not when it comes to our economy, our country's health care system, our nation's energy policy, or our democratic process. That's why I am pleased the President announced his support for Senator Schumer and my efforts to address the radical Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United case, which gives certain foreign-controlled companies as much say in our election process as ordinary citizens.
"House Democrats have stood firm in their commitment to middle class families by stabilizing our economy, preventing almost two million jobs from being lost, supporting small businesses, and lowering taxes for 95 percent of Americans. But many Americans are still hurting and looking for a job -- that's why we must send to the President's desk a jobs bill that builds on the work begun last year. With so much at stake, we must redouble efforts on job creation and ensure that our economy works for everyone."
