Rep. Courtney Statement On Proposed Excise Tax 'Deal'

Representative Joe Courtney, the Connecticut lawmaker who spearheaded the House opposition to the Senate-passed and White House-backed excise tax on "Cadillac' health care plans, released the following statement in light of a compromise on the proposal:

"I am pleased that the House held strong in what has certainly been an uphill battle to protect the middle-class from the Senate's plan to tax health benefits. Important modifications have been proposed that would help protect working families. Adjustments for older workers, high-cost regions, gender, and supplemental insurance, including dental and vision, sound very promising."

"However, the devil is in the details and I will reserve judgment on any compromise until I have had the time toreview the proposal."

Congressman Joe Courtney led a coalition of 193 Democratic colleagues in opposition to the excise tax. In October, the Congressman sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urging rejection of the Senate's excise tax proposal. Click here to download that letter.
