Heinrich: Supreme Court Decision Is A Victory For Corporate Fat Cats, Lousy For Average New Mexicans

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich released the following statement today on the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning the ban on corporate contributions to election campaigns. In its decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Committee, the Court ruled that corporations may spend freely to support or oppose candidates for President and Congress.

"The Citizens United decision is a victory for corporate fat cats, but it's lousy for average New Mexicans. Unless Congress acts, big corporations will be allowed to give unlimited amounts of money to campaigns, and we've already seen how poorly that works at the city and state levels.

"Imagine what will happen when our biggest banks are allowed to shovel money into campaigns that undermine efforts to create greater responsibility and accountability on Wall Street.

"This kind of scenario is simply unacceptable. I will work with my colleagues in the House to put Democracy back in the hands of the American people."
