Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement after returning from a congressional mission to Egypt, Israel, and Turkey regarding security in the Middle East.

Smith was part of a bipartisan delegation of House members in meetings with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, and President Abbdullah Gul of Turkey, among other officials, to discuss the Middle East peace process and the fight against terrorism.

"There are extraordinary forces shaping these nations. To hear firsthand about U.S.-Israel relations, the Middle East peace talks, and the status of economic and political trends in the area was as informative as it was sobering.

"Finding a lasting peace in the Middle East will not be an easy process nor will it be a goal quickly accomplished. However, through outreach, engagement and continued understanding, I have confidence we can advance the peace process to ensure stability in the region for generations to come," Smith said.
