Rep. Foster Votes Against Raising Debt Ceiling
Today, after consistently emphasizing the importance of paying down the debt, Rep. Bill Foster (IL-14) voted against H.R. 4314, legislation that would raise the debt ceiling. The bill passed by a vote of 218-214, and Foster was one of only 39 Democrats to break with the leadership of his party.
"Raising the debt ceiling is a short term fix that does nothing to remedy the underlying problem that faces our country," said Foster. "I remain concerned about our growing national debt and deficit, and still want to see a coherent plan to realistically get our national finances in order."
H.R. 4314 would increase the statutory limit on debt by an amount sufficient to cover obligations through February 11, 2010. Earlier this year, Foster voted against the Democratic budget every time it came up for a vote because it did not do enough to lay down a path towards paying down the debt.
