U.S. Congressman Graves' Reaction to President Bush's State of the Union Address

(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves made the following statement regarding President Bush's State of the Union Address:

"The President outlined a positive vision for this country. Iraq has become the central front in the war on terrorism and we must remain committed to our troops there. Terrorism is not just a foreign policy issue, it's a Missouri issue; it threatens our homes, schools, and businesses. I agree with the president's plan to invest more to better prevent terrorism and better respond to a potential terrorist act.

In addition to taking care of our troops abroad, we need to take care of our veterans here at home. President Bush's commitment to veterans is unmatched and I support his proposed increase in veterans funding. If we want to show our appreciation for our veterans' sacrifice, we can do so by investing in quality health care for America's veterans.

Education funding has increased by historic levels since President Bush took office. I support his vision for accountability and his commitment to funding education. Thanks to his leadership, our schools have a plan to get to where they need to go so that every child receives a quality education.

I am especially pleased with the president's call to make the tax relief permanent. Our economy is making great progress thanks to the tax relief we passed last year. This is no time to turn back. I have been traveling the district for the past few weeks listening to people's concerns about the economy and not one person asked me to raise taxes. President Bush and I are committed to tax relief to help create new jobs."
