Van Hollen Statement On President Obama's Speech On Afghanistan

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) issued the following statement on President Obama's speech on Afghanistan:

"More than eight years ago our nation was the target of a terrorist attack launched by al Qaeda operating out of Afghanistan. Today, because the previous administration diverted attention and resources away from this region to Iraq, Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda continue to regain strength and plot attacks against Americans from along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

"President Obama has rightly concluded that the status quo in Afghanistan and Pakistan is unacceptable and poses a threat to the national security of the United States. He was also right to take the time to carefully consider a new strategy. I believe that Members of Congress must give this issue the same careful consideration that the President did, and I look forward to hearing the testimony of a range of experts over the coming weeks."
