U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., issued this statement following her vote against the Democrats' bill to institute government-forced health care in the United States:
"This bill replaces individual freedom and personal responsibility with big government dependency and coercion. It burdens people and small businesses in Wyoming with new taxes for budget busting healthcare reforms and forces people to buy insurance whether it makes sense for them or not.
"Every member of the U.S. House had an opportunity to support a health care plan that the American people could afford. The Republican plan I supported cuts the deficit in ten years, lowers healthcare premiums across the country, and it does it without robbing the American people of their freedom and their dignity.
"Sadly, this House voted to push millions of Americans into a government-run health care program that even members of Congress will not subject themselves. Speaker Pelosi's bill will shackle the freedom of the American people while empowering the federal government, which is exactly the opposite of what our founding fathers were trying to achieve with the Constitution.
"I offered amendments to H.R. 3962 to allow states to protect their citizens from government-forced insurance, taxes and possible imprisonment for not buying bureaucrat-approved coverage and government policies that come between them and their doctors. My amendments also protected states from unfunded mandates that steal from our state's treasury to pay for reforms that don't work for the people of Wyoming.
"Unfortunately, my amendment and dozens of others have been swept under the rug by the ruling Democrat party, just as this bill does with the freedom of the American people.
"I call on the Senate to sweep this ill-conceived trillion dollar debacle under the rug and I urge Americans everywhere not to give up hope. Working together, we can achieve real reform to our health care system without trampling on freedom and mortgaging our children's future."
