Congressman Guthrie Reacts To New House Health Care Bill

Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement on Thursday, October 29, 2009, after the House Majority Leaders unveiled their latest plan for a government takeover of health care:

"Today the Majority Leadership in the House moved forward with a health care plan that is more of the same and has been continually rejected by a majority of the American people.

"The plan includes a government run health insurance company that I believe will lead to a government takeover of the entire health care system. The bill also raises taxes, cuts Medicare benefits, and will increase premiums for those already struggling to pay for health insurance.

"This bill also creates an unfunded mandate by increasing state requirements in Medicaid. Creating new burdens for Kentucky's already struggling budget will leave less available for our schools, universities and important state programs.

"We can fix what is broken without radically threatening the health care system in this country. I urge the Majority to work toward a bipartisan solution that will make health care more affordable and more accessible."
