Van Hollen Applauds Judiciary Committee'S Action On Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Enforcement Act

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) issued the following statement applauding the House Judiciary Committee's action on the Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Enforcement Act. The legislation was passed today with a bipartisan margin of 20-9:

"For far too long the health insurance industry has been exempt from the antitrust laws that govern most other businesses, and they have abused that benefit. The Judiciary Committee's passage today of the bipartisan Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Enforcement Act marks an important step in ending this problem.

"By investigating and prosecuting abusive practices like price fixing and market allocation, we help ensure real competition in the insurance industry. This legislation is an important piece in our health insurance reform plan. We are committed to cutting costs, increasing competition, and giving American families access to affordable, quality health care."
