Van Hollen Applauds Senate Finance Passage Of A Health Insurance Reform Bill

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the Senate Finance Committee's passage of a health insurance reform bill:

"I applaud the Senate Finance Committee's action today in passing their health insurance reform bill. It marks another important step in the reform process, as now all five committees of jurisdiction have passed a bill. While we are farther down the road to reform than ever before, now is not the time to become complacent. As we saw yesterday with the insurance industry's ‘report' release -- clearly a last minute act of desperation -- opponents of reform will stop at nothing to protect the status quo.

"As we move forward, I urge the Republican leadership to work with us and abandon their blind support for an insurance industry that all but threatened to raise premiums if a reform bill is passed. Senator Snowe's decision to support the Finance bill should serve as a reminder to her party that there is an alternative to just saying No all the time."
