Keeping program alive is a bipartisan effort and would ensure Texas taxpayers aren't left holding the federal government's tab, Cornyn says
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, the top Republican on the Immigration, Border Security and Refugees Subcommittee, today announced he is co-sponsoring two amendments to increase funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP), through which local governments in Texas have received millions for the costs associated with incarcerating criminal illegal aliens. The two amendments to the Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Bill, currently under consideration by the Senate, would add $172 million to the program.
"It is the federal government's responsibility to cover the costs associated with prosecuting and incarcerating criminal aliens. It is a responsibility that has all too often been abdicated and now President Obama is proposing eliminating SCAAP altogether. SCAAP is critical because it ensures Texas taxpayers aren't left holding the federal government's tab. Its continuation has bipartisan support and my colleagues and I will continue fighting to keep this important program alive," said Sen. Cornyn.
