"What we do know for certain is that the amendment process actually increased the price tag for the Baucus Bill by $90 billion but doesn't insure any more people"
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) preliminary analysis of the Baucus Bill.
"Today's CBO score demonstrates the true cost of the Baucus Bill is unknown. We must take the time to convert the Chairman's mark into legislative language, because as CBO Director Doug Elmendorf notes - a review of such language could lead to significant changes in the estimates of the proposal's effects on the federal budget and insurance coverage.'
"What we do know for certain is that the amendment process actually increased the price tag for the Baucus Bill by $90 billion but doesn't insure any more people. It also still contains massive cuts to Medicare, tax increases on many individuals and small businesses and violates President Obama's pledge that Americans who like their coverage can keep it.
"We must slow down, gather all the facts, confirm that they are correct, and give the American people and their elected representatives a chance to read the bill before Congress votes on it. The excuse that this is the way that business has always been done in Washington is not acceptable, especially when we are risking harm to the health care benefits of 300 million Americans."
