Boozman Introduces Bill To Crackdown On Flavored Meth

In recognition of Methamphetamine Awareness Month, U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today introduced critical legislation to protect America's children from drug dealers who market directly to minors.

The "Stop Marketing Illegal Drugs to Minors Act", amends current drug laws to enhance penalties for those who manufacture drugs designed to appeal to minors with enhanced packaging, coloring, or flavoring.

H.R. 3702 specifically targets flavored methamphetamine, a version of the drug specially colored, and specifically made to have a candy-like taste. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, drug dealers are pushing strawberry, chocolate and cola flavored meth in order to lure in children as new customers using the candy-like taste to create the impression that the drug is less dangerous.

"There is extremely alarming and we must protect our children from this danger," Boozman said. "The goal of this bill is to tell meth manufacturers, dealers, and all others who alter their illegal drug formulas and packaging, to keep away from our children or there will be severe penalties."

The "Stop Marketing Illegal Drugs to Minors Act" doubles the maximum penalties that judges may impose on drug traffickers who design controlled substances to appeal to children. In methamphetamine cases, it doubles the mandatory minimum that judges must impose.
